Over the years while working in the field of research of the supernatural, Birmingham, AL came up in conversation. Three places were always mentioned; Sloss Furnace - for their instances of hauntings, sightings and other unexplained oddities; the Tutwiler Hotel and the Redmont Hotel - for being famous in 1952 where Hiram Hank Williams spent his last night alive on his uncompleted trip from Montgomery to Charleston, WV. I had the pleasure of being one of the first people to investigate Sloss before it was made famous by television and paranormal clubs. We even investigated it with the Birmingham local news as well as numerous other occasions.
The furnace was founded in 1881 by James Sloss. It was in operation for almost 90 years ceasing production in 1971. The stories go that they had to discontinue their graveyard shift due to numerous reports of accidents and deaths that decreased production on this particular shift as a result of a cruel foreman.
